Unit III: Revolutions and Reactions ~ 1550 - 1850

Overarching Question: What social, political, and economic conditions lead to the overthrow of established ideas on both sides of the Atlantic?


When examining this Unit, your objective should be to find the connections between the various lessons.  You must also incorporate the following factors within your answer.  Analyze political, social, economic and ideological factors and examine whether the results were equitable and or brought progress to the people of that era.  Be sure to assimilate the 5 Themes of Geography into your answer as well.  

In order to be successful you will have to research the information and be able to discuss your answer analytically.  YOU ARE THE HISTORIAN AND YOU MUST PROVIDE ADEQUATE EVIDENCE FOR YOUR ANSWER.  You will have to demonstrate a proficient knowledge of the curriculum and incorporate the above factors to reach this objective.   

You will be required to complete Venn Diagrams associated to the questions, take valuable notes, be able to answer the following questions, write a 55 word summary (of the lesson you were assigned), create a PowerPoint, and construct a 500 word essay answering the Overarching Question.

Lesson A

Compelling Question: How did the European Enlightenment and the conflict in England lead to political progress?

Lesson B

Compelling Question: How did Enlightenment thought, the American Revolution, global war, and growing economic crises impact social and political conditions in France?

Lesson C

Compelling Question: How did the actions of Napoleon both spread and suppress the ideals of liberalism and nationalism?

Lesson D

Compelling Question: To what extent did the revolutions in Latin America, Haiti, and Mexico accomplish Enlightenment goals?

How did trade and migration patterns cause intellectual, economic, political, and cultural transformations during the 16th through 18th centuries?

Lesson E

Compelling Question: How did the internal and external geographic, technological, economic, and political changes in Britain and the United States impact the world market economy?

Lesson F

Compelling Question: How did changes in the world economy, Enlightenment thought, religion, democratic revolutions, and slave resistance bring about the abolition of slave trade and the emancipation of slaves in Britain and America?

Your answers should show the various connections of the different questions of Unit III.


Lesson A: Information that is required in your answer.

Explain how Absolutism shifts  to limited government by showing how the Enlightenment created a change in thought which caused English conflict which led to political progress.
   - Analyze how the Enlightenment affected absolutism and how citizens gained political progress by discussing Individualism (Individual vs. Government; Individual vs. Individual; Individual vs. self), Rationalism, (opinions and actions are based logic rather than religious belief or emotional response) and Relativism (equality of all ideas; views depend on the individual or groups holding them).
   - Discuss at least two English Conflicts
         - 1 being the Glorious Revolution.  Discuss the English Bill of Rights and limited government
   - Show what the people received when they gained political progress.


Lesson B: Information that is required in your answer.


Connect how External social and political conditions (Enlightenment thought, the American Revolution, and Global wars), Internal social and political conditions and growing economic crisis effected France.  


There needs to be a connection to Lesson A within Lesson B

   - Show the strength of France and the downfall of France
   - Identify 5 philosophers need to be identified and explain there importance
   - Discuss the importance of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution 
          This should connect with the 5 philosophers
   - Analyze how global wars effected France BEFORE and DURING the revolution.
        French & Indian War (Seven Years War)
         Must choose at least another war
   - Evaluate how France was effected socially, politically, and economically during the French Revolution and during the reign of Napoleon.
          -  Show how the French Revolution led to Napoleon rule.
          - Discuss who held political control after Napoleon's reign.
