Snap Shot

After the parent(s) and the student have viewed the syllabus (located at the bottom of the page) go to the Parents Corner and fill out the Parent/Student Form.  Your child will receive an Assessment grade for your participation.

This page has been created to give you a quick snap shot of the website. This website was generated for students to be successful outside of the classroom. Contact information, assignments, resources and expectations can be accessed. If you need to contact me, please contact me at larry.roberson@dc.gov.

What is your SYSTEM?

When an individual has a system that identifies their strengths and adapts to their weaknesses, they have a better chance of becoming successful.  I have created a system (which is always being modified) to ensure that the individuals in my courses succeed.
Priority + System + Consistency + Efficiency + Being Relentless + Time + Mental Stamina
EQUALS SUCCESS.
As a student you need to develop a system for you to be successful.  This system should address your academic, career and personal goals along with time to have fun.
THERE WILL ALWAYS BE HOMEWORK since reading, reviewing and preview are concepts I emphasize in my courses.  Reviewing is simply reviewing any work or concepts we have discussed in class.  Previewing is preparing for what will be discussed in upcoming classes. These two concepts are intertwined since students have to read.  Readings will be given and students will be expected to read and be able to discuss what they have read.  There WILL BE some literature assigned that will require a thesaurus and dictionary.  The assigned reading may take some time to complete but sufficient time will be given to complete the assignment.  Most importantly students need to learn and master the vocabulary for their course.  In order to be successful within their course they have to be able to not only know the assigned vocabulary, but be able to apply them correctly.

In addition to the above information, there normally will be a project that will be assigned to the class which will require sufficient time to complete.
If a Child says they have no homework; chances are very likely they are not being entirely truthful.

Keys to signs to assess if your student is succeeding in their courses.

1.  How well can your child discuss the material that is being discussed in class?
           - Are they giving you substantial information or is it vague?
           - Check their Exit Tickets
           - Ask questions from the Unit Inquiry Arc Guide (7th Grade Guides, 8th Grade Guides)

2. How well does your child know the key terms and vocabulary?  Have them show you first                hand by going to Quizlet and taking a test that you can make!
            - 7th Grade Vocabulary on Quizlet
            - 8th Grade Vocabulary on Quizlet

3.  Most importantly is your child able to apply the concepts being discussed outside the                       classroom?
           - An example would be knowing the Bill of Rights and applying the Bill of Rights.
                      - The difference is if a child finds himself in a situation with law enforcement, will the                            child know if their rights are being violated?  Are they able to ensure they do not                                                incriminate themselves?
If a child is able to have a in depth conversation, and is able to apply the concepts then the student is showing signs that they are understanding the information that is being presented to them.
